Mention Ireland abroad and eyes glaze over at the thought of green fields, chatty people and creamy pints of Guinness. Mention Irish food and eyes simply glaze over.

Sure, you’ll get polite inquiries about Irish stew. Previous visitors may even hail the fries dished up in Irish B&Bs. But for most who have yet to visit, food and Ireland simply don’t compute.

That’s a shame, because food and Ireland definitely do compute. Right now, in fact, it’s no overstatement to say that Irish cuisine is undergoing a revolution.

Within the space of a generation, Ireland has transformed itself from a society hooked on shepherd’s pie and Angel Delight to a producer of some of the best speciality meats, cheeses and breads in Europe.

We have gone from treating food as fuel to the brink of becoming a foodie hotspot.

Travel, diversity, determined chefs and tireless ambassadors such as Georgina Campbell, John and Sally McKenna and Clodagh McKenna (pictured) have all helped Irish food find its mojo.

The effects from the recent legalizing of gay marriage in New York are already starting to take shape. In peparation for the day legal ceremonies will finally be able to be performed—July 24—Mayor Bloomberg is preparing to launch a new campaign called “NYC I Do,” which will seek to bring in gay tourists looking to get hitched. What does that mean for the city? About $400 million in estimated revenue over the next three years, just from gay marriage–related spending!

‘Passports, boarding passes, money’ might be your normal pre-holiday mantra, but in these days of threatened airline strikes and volatile volcanoes, insurance should really be top of your list.

Yet many of us are still lax when it comes to taking out cover, especially when it comes to visiting friends and family abroad.

A new survey in Britain has revealed that almost 80pc of people don’t bother to take out insurance when they go to visit family and friends overseas. Do they really think their sister in Sydney or nephew in New York is going to fork out on hospital fees if they end up with a broken back and have to be stretchered home?

The poll also showed the key factor in their decision came down to cash.
